Writer onboarding guide

Excerpts from an internal guide I created to help new writers understand the team’s workflow and expectations.

Why it existed

The guide gave new writers one place to understand how work moved through the team instead of relying on repeated verbal explanations.

How work was assigned

Writers received article topics and briefings through the team’s task tracker. The task details sat beside the assignment so the writer could see what was required before starting.

Deadlines

Each task came with a deadline. Where a deadline was not explicitly attached, the guide set a default turnaround expectation and required writers to flag potential delays early.

Submission

Completed drafts were submitted as editable Google Docs links in the tracker after the writer completed the required sharing and pre-submission checks.

Working from a brief

The briefing contained the task requirements. Writers were expected to follow it closely and ask a supervisor before making material changes to the direction.

Pre-submission QA

  • Readability and sentence-length checks
  • Grammar and proofreading
  • Plagiarism checks
  • American English spelling
  • Formatting and title-case consistency

Performance expectations

The guide also documented that repeated missed deadlines, failure to follow briefings or feedback, plagiarism and consistently poor-quality writing could lead to performance action.
